Delta junction to Fairbanks

semi-overcast 9 °C

June 1
It was a leisurely start this morning. We really had no big plans, only to stop and find some cool fishing holes. Had breakfast at Fast Eddie’s in Tok, it was the happening place.

We stopped at many lakes today…some on the side of the highway and other where we had to hike in.

This was a lake we had to hike to, it’s called Craig Lake

There were many rivers that were still frozen

Delta Junction is where the Alcan (Alaskan) highway ends and the Richardson highway begins. Richardson highway takes one to Fairbanks. Like other Alaskan towns, it’s small. Provides gas, groceries, and a two or three places to eat. We stopped at the Big Delta State Historical Park on the Tanana River preserves Rika’s Roadhouse and Landing. The roadhouse was an important crossroad for prospectors, travellers, traders, and military during the early days of the 20th century.

Stopped at Buffalo Burger Drive In. You order your food and they deliver it to the table, the car, or your RV.

Leisurely start today. Stopped at The Knotty Store. It was filled with handmade wooden souvenirs, carved wood statue, clocks, bowls etc.

As we passed then Eielson Air Force Base, we saw jets taking off from the runway. The base occupies 63,195 acres and has the second longest runway in North America. There were signs saying “No stopping, no parking, and no photography along this stretch of the highway”.
