Left a very rainy Homer, with the weather the way it’s been it was difficult to find a tour to do. While we had lunch we discussed our route to Juneau. We decided to drive the Top of the World highway to get to Juneau.
View from the campground
On the way up to Homer we noticed fisher people along the Russian/Kenai river, so we decided to stop on the way back. Paid for parking and was told parking was for 24 hours (their way of telling us camping was allowed). We parked with the intention of taking the world famous Russian River Ferry. The ferry is located at the junction of the Russian and Kenai Rivers on the Kenai Peninsula.
We decided not to take the ferry but to watch the fisher people on the shore instead. After an hour of watching, we found ourselves driving to the bait and tackle shop.
They fish from the shores. As the weeks go on, they all stand shoulder to shoulder and fish from the shore. They call it “combat fishing”.
Cleaning table in the water, they clean their fish and throw the fish carcus into the fast running water.
He caught one within the first half hour
Two more after dinner
Dinner…yummy!

Up early and on the road, another rainy day! We stopped in Anchorage for lunch at Burger F1.
The weather is getting brighter. Headed to Glennallen for the night…some of the views
Matanuska Glacier was a beautiful sight!
It’s been a long day of travelling, we’ve settled in for the night in Gakona. Tomorrow is going to be another long travel week day as we are going to try to get to Dawson City, 6.5 hours away.
